About the Canon XA 10
The Canon video XA10 is very compact for a professional model. This makes it excellent for hours of on the move shooting. It is not much larger than some of the top Vixia models (such as HF S21) The XA10 is 1.7 pounds. Thats almost ¼ of a pound lighter than the XF100. Many happy owners are trundling around for hours on end with this camcorder and its does not bother them at all.
The XA10 has the same 1/3 inch image sensor that prevoius XF models had. It does not use XF codec to record and uses AVCHD instead. The ACVHD compression limits it to a 24 Mbps bitrate maximum and a 4:2:0 color sampling rather than the 50Mbps and 4:2:2 sampling like the XF100 and XF105 models.
The Canon XA10 records using dual SD/SDHC/SDXC memory card slots. It has the bility to record to both card slots at the same time. This cool little feature gives you an instant backup. It also comes with a hearty 64GB (2 x 32GB chips) of internal memory. This will also add to the easy mobility of using this video camera on the go.
The removable handlebar is getting conflicting feedback from users. Some thing its like a bit of a gimmick and question the quality of it. A couple of people are also complaining about the switches on the handlebar rattling. Where other users think its brilliant and have no complaints at all. I guess its one of those features thats a love it or hate it one. I guess its better than not being able to remove it. There are dual inputs to connect external mic to for top professional stereo audio recording (XLR) and users are loving this.
The standard battery pack is just adequate and gives about 90 mins shoot time. As with most technology some people want to push the boundaries straight away. If you want to go for hours and hours without needing to recharge I would suggest getting a second extended battery. There are a number of options on the market.
The XA 10 lens is the exact same lens as used on the XF100 & XF105. It is 10x optical zoom and 30.4 – 304mm focal length. The zoom on the camcorder is great. One user reports being able to zoom in and read a car number plate at almost 1000 feet! (300m = 984ft) Thats just awesome. All you budding private eyes take note.
The camcorder has an infared mode with a set to white and set to green function. The lens design allows the infared light to pass through to the image sensor. Being able to shoot with no light at all may appeal to the nature watchers or the private eyes amongst us. The Canon XA 10 is ideal for this.
